Linval Thompson is a celebrated Jamaican singer, songwriter, and producer whose work helped define the roots reggae and early dancehall eras. Born and raised in Kingston, with time spent in Queens, New York, Thompson began his career in the mid-1970s, recording his debut single “No Other Woman” in Brooklyn. After returning to Jamaica, he collaborated with reggae legends like Lee “Scratch” Perry and Bunny Lee, releasing his first album “Don’t Cut Off Your Dreadlocks” in 1976.
As both an artist and producer, Thompson became a key figure in reggae’s evolution, creating influential albums such as “I Love Marijuana” and producing for icons including Dennis Brown, Barrington Levy, Cornell Campbell, and The Wailing Souls. His rhythms also formed the backbone of several classic Scientist dub albums. With reissues like “Ride On Dreadlocks 1975–77” bringing his music to new generations, Linval Thompson remains a cornerstone of Jamaica’s rich musical legacy.
